Badminton

October 11, 2006

As we are doing Badminton this term in our P.E. lessons, I thought you might be interested to know that the rules of badminton have changed over the summer.

The Scoring System

A match consists of the best of three games. This means that if you won two games, you wouldn’t have to play the third. The games consist of 21 points. I the score reaches 20 all, the side that gains a two point lead first, wins that game.

However, if the score gets to 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point wins the game, otherwise the game could go on forever! Whichever side won the last game serves first in the next one.

Intervals and changes of Ends

When the leading score reaches 11 points, players have a 60 second (one minute) interval. They are allowed a 2 minute interval between games. In the third game, players change ends when a side scores 11 points.

Singles

At ther beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right service court (like in tennis). When it is odd, the server serves from the left service court.
If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the other service court.
If the reciever wins a rally, the reciever scores a point and becomes the new server.

Doubles

At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right court. When the score is odd, the server serves from the left court (like singles)
If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server serves again from the other service court – the serving side’s players swap sides.
If the recieving side wins a rally, the recieving side scores a point, the recieving side becomes the new serving side.
The player of the recieving side who served last stays in the same service court from where he served last. This means that his partner stays where he was too.

The players don’t change the service court they are standing in until they win a point and therefore their side is serving.

It is quite similar to the old rules but for those who didn’t know it to begin with hope it helped! The main thing that is different is that you can win a point even when you are not serving which was not the case last year!
